Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the phenomenon of the distinct smell associated with space and space suits. Participants explore potential sources of this smell, including chemical residues and outgassing from materials used in space suits, as well as the effects of the space environment on sensory experiences.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants suggest that the smell could originate from particles or residues on the space suits, questioning how these might interact with the space environment.
  • Others propose that the smell may be related to materials used in the construction of the suits, such as plasticizers and cleaning residues that outgas in space.
  • A participant notes that astronauts on Skylab reported a lack of smell due to efficient air cleaning systems, indicating a contrast to the smell experienced outside.
  • One participant references an attempt by a chemist to recreate the smell, speculating that ozone might be a contributing factor.
  • Another participant mentions that the smell is reminiscent of using an arc welder, suggesting it may involve ions and lighter particles deposited on the suits.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express various hypotheses regarding the source of the smell, with no consensus reached on a definitive explanation. Multiple competing views remain regarding the chemical origins and sensory experiences associated with space.

Contextual Notes

Participants acknowledge the complexity of the issue, including the potential for missing assumptions about the materials involved and the effects of the space environment on sensory perception.

Who May Find This Useful

This discussion may be of interest to those exploring the sensory experiences of astronauts, the chemistry of materials used in space exploration, and the environmental effects of space on human perception.

This is just weird, and probably has a good explanation.. But how can a space suit or space have a distinct smell? Could the smell be coming from particles off their space suits? If so, how/why?

What were they working on outside? It could be whatever residue might be on the parts of the space station they were working on that rubbed off on their suits.

Probbaly plasticisors and cleaning residue outgassing from the suits.

The skylab astronauts mentioned one of the disorientating things was missing the smell of anything - the air cleaning system so efficently removed any chemical residue from the air.
They said they opened the lemon cleaning wipes that came with the food just to have something to smell.

He said that it smelled similar to using an arc welder, so I would guess that it is probably the smell of ions and such deposited on the suit. Maybe some of that is ozone, but I would guess that a lot of it is lighter particles.
