SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the limitations of using passive RFID tags with the TI RFID evaluation kit when placed on metal surfaces. It is established that metal absorbs radio frequency (RF) signals, which interferes with the tag's ability to receive and respond to the antenna's signal. This phenomenon is critical for users working with RFID technology, as it directly impacts the placement and functionality of RFID tags in various environments.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of passive RFID technology
  • Familiarity with RF signal propagation
  • Knowledge of the TI RFID evaluation kit
  • Basic principles of induction charging
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the effects of metal on RF signal absorption
  • Explore alternative materials for RFID tag placement
  • Learn about active RFID tags and their advantages over passive tags
  • Investigate shielding techniques to mitigate RF interference
USEFUL FOR

Engineers, product designers, and anyone involved in RFID technology implementation, particularly those working with the TI RFID evaluation kit and seeking to optimize tag performance in various environments.

Hi,
I've been doing some work with a TI RFID evaluation kit and I noticed that when I place one of the tags onto metal, they don't work. These are passive tags that respond to a signal from an antenna after being charged through induction and I was just curious as to why they can't be placed directly onto metal.

Thanks.

If I had to guess, I'd say that the metal is absorbing the RF signal, or at least enough of it so that the tag isn't picking up a signal. I can't be sure though.
