Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around troubleshooting a plot issue in Mathematica, specifically regarding the smoothness of a graph at high frequency values. Participants explore potential causes for the unexpected plot behavior and suggest various checks and considerations.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested, Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • Chrescht reports that the plot generated in Mathematica is not smooth at high frequency values, despite expectations for it to be so.
  • Some participants, like CL, note that the issue resolved itself without any changes, suggesting it may be related to the software's performance or settings.
  • One participant suggests that severe rounding errors on the user's computer could be a factor affecting the plot's appearance.
  • Another participant points out that the y-axis values may be close to machine precision, indicating that the variations in the graph might be too small to discern properly.
  • It is suggested that the problem may be more related to scaling rather than an inherent issue with Mathematica itself.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the cause of the plot issue, with some attributing it to software performance and others suggesting it relates to the scale of the data. No consensus is reached on a definitive cause.

Contextual Notes

Participants mention potential issues with machine precision and scaling, but do not resolve these concerns or provide specific solutions.

HI,

I've done the following but the plot that I get is not what it has to be at the big values of the frequency f. The graph should be smooth but isn't..

Does somebody know where the problem is?!
The nb file is attached.

Thanks,

Chrescht

Hmmm. Strange - I ran your notebook, and I get a smooth curve. Perhaps your computer is having some pretty severe rounding errors. Kind of strange...

well, today it works fine over here too..but I didn't change anything..I think it simply depends of the Mathematica's mood..couldn't find any other reason

thanks for running the file,

CL

Look at your y-axis!

Check to make sure your values aren't close to machine precision.

As J77 said, look at that y axis, the actual variations in your graph are so small that you can't actually tell what the difference between them is. Looks more like a scale problem, than any problem with mathematica.
