Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around troubleshooting issues related to reinstalling Java on a Windows Vista system, specifically addressing error code 25099. Participants explore various methods to resolve the installation problem, including registry checks, process management, and version compatibility.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports encountering error 25099 while attempting to reinstall Java after removing the old program and checking the registry.
  • Another suggests killing the jqs.exe process in the command prompt before attempting the installation, although this participant acknowledges the difficulty of accessing the command prompt without the Vista DVD.
  • Several participants discuss the absence of Java-related processes, with one requesting a screenshot of open processes for further assistance.
  • There are mentions of browser compatibility issues and software problems that may affect the installation process.
  • One participant questions the architecture of the Java installation, noting past difficulties with the 64-bit version and suggesting the use of the 32-bit version instead.
  • A participant references an explanation of error code 25099 from the Java website and shares experiences with different Java versions, recommending the latest Java 5 version over version 6 due to issues encountered.
  • Another participant suggests deleting internet browsers as a potential solution, while another counters that this may not be necessary and emphasizes that older Java versions can linger on the system.
  • One participant mentions that installing a JRE requires only the jar files and proper configuration of environment variables.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express a range of opinions on the best approach to resolve the installation issue, with no consensus reached on a definitive solution. There are competing views on whether to focus on process management, version selection, or browser-related issues.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the specific version of Java being installed and the implications of system architecture (32-bit vs. 64-bit). There are also unresolved questions regarding the effectiveness of various troubleshooting steps mentioned.

Try http://raproducts.org/

But do "kill jqs.exe" in command prompt first and try then (This maybe running in the background).

Alt+Ctrl+Del

Go the processes, and find if you have any java processes running. Just kill them including jqs.exe. And try installing java. Hopefully that would work.

thanks for help rootX, i can find nothing Java and there is no jqs.exe listed.

Could you provide a screenshot of all open processes?

I don't see any java related programs in it.

I can't be more helpful if JavaRa doesn't solve it.

What architecture are you trying to install Java on? Are you trying to get the 64-bit JRE/JDK running? I had no luck with that, and I had to go back to using the 32-bit versions.

Right click on "Computer" on your desktop. A system window should open. What does it say under "System type"?

Then copy and paste the file name of the Java installer you are using. Or paste the link to the download page of the installer you are using.

The Java.com site has this explanation of the error code that I'm guessing that you visited.

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/error_25099.xml"

BTW, which version are you trying to install? The developers in our office (including myself) have tried installing the version 6 JDK and we had so many issues with it, that we decided to wait until Sun resolves some of the problems. Unless you really need it for something specific, I would try installing the latest Java 5 version.

It isn't necessary to delete browsers to solve this problem. Java does have a tendency to leave older versions of itself on the computer - sometimes in the directories for the browsers. However, I still think that the current problem is due more to the version of Java than anything else.

To install a jre all you need is the jar files on your computer and PATH and CLASSPATH environment variables should point to the right places.
