Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for literature and books focused on physics, cosmology, and astrophysics, particularly for someone interested in understanding the origins of the Earth and the universe. The scope includes foundational concepts such as time, space, gravity, relativity, and notable figures in physics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses a desire to learn about the Earth's and universe's past through literature, seeking resources that cover a wide range of topics in physics and cosmology.
  • Another participant recommends "Six Easy Pieces" and "Six Not So Easy Pieces" by Feynman as accessible introductions to fundamental physics.
  • A different participant suggests "The Feynman Lectures on Physics: The New Millennium Edition" as a potentially informative resource, noting that while the lectures are valuable, they may require effort and a solid understanding of mathematics to fully engage with.
  • It is mentioned that "The Feynman Lectures" are available for free online, which could be beneficial for self-study.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the value of Feynman's works as resources for learning physics, but there is no consensus on the best approach to engaging with them, as some emphasize reading while others suggest a more studious approach.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not specified any limitations or assumptions regarding the level of prior knowledge required for the recommended books or the mathematical background needed to understand them.

Who May Find This Useful

Individuals interested in self-study of physics and cosmology, particularly those seeking foundational knowledge and resources for understanding the universe's origins.

~I HOPE THIS IS THE RIGHT PLACE FOR THIS TOPIC~

Hello, I am new to this forum. I have always been interested in the Earth's/universe's past. I am seeking the best literature/books that you know of that focus on physics/cosmology/astrophysics...etc in terms of learning more about figuring out more about our past origins.

Things pertaining to time, space, gravity, relativity, black holes, warps, speed of light, magnetic fields, Newton/Einstein (other recognized geniuses)...everything that gave way to our current knowledge of our past.

I want to start as if I know nothing from basics, and work up to what we know now and what we would like to know if possible.

I have seen books and television shows that intrigued me, but would like to actually get involved more now. Reading and grasping things on my own is more my forte, so books would really help me out. Thank you for reading, I'd really appreciate it if you can point me in the right direction.

The books "Six Easy Pieces", and "Six Not So Easy Pieces" are good short books by Feynman. They're very readable and discuss the fundamentals of physics.

I assume you're looking for a book to read rather than study.

Thank you...from looking at his work, I think this might be even more informative.

"The Feynman Lectures on Physics: The New Millennium Edition"

The Feynman Lectures are a great resource, but they're not the kind of thing i'd sit down and read. If you're willing to put the effort in and study them, you can't go wrong. (assuming your maths is up to the task).

They're online for free here: http://www.feynmanlectures.caltech.edu/
