Understanding Scattering Theory: Seeking Easy-to-Read References

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion focuses on the challenges of understanding "Scattering Theory" as presented in J. J. Sakurai’s textbook. Key concepts mentioned include the Lippmann-Schwinger Equation, S matrix, T matrix, and the Optical Theorem. The user seeks more accessible references to enhance comprehension of these topics, despite appreciating Sakurai's work as a supplementary resource during their quantum mechanics course.

PREREQUISITES
  • Familiarity with quantum mechanics concepts, particularly the S matrix and T matrix.
  • Understanding of the Lippmann-Schwinger Equation and its applications in scattering theory.
  • Basic knowledge of the Optical Theorem and its significance in quantum mechanics.
  • Experience with advanced textbooks in physics, particularly those focused on quantum mechanics.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research alternative textbooks on scattering theory, such as "Quantum Mechanics: Concepts and Applications" by Nouredine Zettili.
  • Explore online resources or lecture notes that simplify the Lippmann-Schwinger Equation.
  • Investigate video lectures or tutorials that explain the S matrix and T matrix in a more digestible format.
  • Study the Optical Theorem through practical examples and applications in quantum mechanics.
USEFUL FOR

Students and educators in physics, particularly those studying quantum mechanics and seeking clearer explanations of scattering theory concepts.

Currently, I am combating against the "Scattering theory" with J J Sakurai’s Textbook.
The Lippman- Schwinger Equation, S matrix, T matrix, Optical Theorem,...

But I find the explanation in Sakurai's book is not very clear or pedagogical. I want to find some easy-to-read references to have a better understanding of it.

Any recommendations? Thank you very much.

I love this book. I used it as a supplement during a second semester QM course that used Sakurai. I still read it now for fun.
