i don't understand why wave is a function of both time and distance and i think one is enough.can some one explain that to me?
The discussion centers around the nature of wave functions in physics, specifically why they depend on both time and distance. Participants explore the implications of having multiple variables in wave equations, addressing conceptual misunderstandings and mathematical foundations.
Participants exhibit a range of views, with some agreeing on the necessity of multiple variables in wave functions while others remain uncertain about the relationship between time and distance in this context. The discussion does not reach a consensus on the underlying conceptual issues.
Limitations include varying interpretations of wave behavior, the need for clear definitions of terms like "length of a snapshot," and unresolved mathematical steps in understanding wave equations.

You solve time-dependent Schroedinger equation to get eigenfunctions, so, eigenfunctions is a function of space and time. Arbitrary wavefunction may be constructed from those time and space dependent eigenfunctions, so, arbitrary wavefunction must also be a function of space and time. Conclusion is, it is all caused by the Schroedinger equation.Sobhan said:i don't understand why wave is a function of both time and distance and i think one is enough.can some one explain that to me?
These two or more variables (at most 4) must include time.Windadct said:Well it does not need to be TIME, but it does need to be 2 (or more) variables.
You must be confusing "oscillation" and "wave".Windadct said:I am reading this as a much simpler question, a wave is a pattern, and can occur in two (non time) dimensions. y=sin(x)
