SUMMARY

The discussion centers on a decision between continuing studies at Heriot-Watt University (HW) or switching to the University of Edinburgh (UoE) for a physics degree. While UoE is ranked higher, concerns about the quality of STEM teaching have been raised. The participant, an undergraduate physics student, is particularly focused on pursuing a PhD in computational physics or quantum mechanics, noting that UoE's research interests do not align with their goals. Ultimately, the decision hinges on balancing institutional prestige with the quality of education and research alignment.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of university ranking systems and their implications.
  • Familiarity with physics disciplines, particularly computational physics and quantum mechanics.
  • Knowledge of the differences in teaching quality across universities.
  • Awareness of PhD program requirements and research alignment.
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the specific physics programs and faculty at the University of Edinburgh.
  • Investigate the computational physics and quantum mechanics research opportunities at Heriot-Watt University.
  • Explore student reviews and testimonials regarding STEM teaching quality at both universities.
  • Connect with current students or alumni from both institutions to gain insights on their experiences.
USEFUL FOR

Undergraduate physics students, prospective PhD candidates, and anyone evaluating university programs in relation to academic and research goals.

Hello, I'm currently an undergrad physics student at Heriot-Watt University. However, I have the oppertunity to switch to the UoE physics course. I'm not really sure what to do. UoE is generally higher ranked, but I've heard some not very nice things about the STEM teaching there. I've had some great classes here at HW but Ive also had ones that are not so great. I wish to pursue a PhD in physics, most likely something to do with computational physics or quantum mechanics, and I'm not sure how smart switching would be as UoE research interests do not align.
