AI Thread Summary
A computer with two USB ports experienced issues with one port, causing delays and missing characters when a keyboard and mouse were connected. Switching to the other port resolved the issue, but both ports are needed. The user suspects software interference, particularly after installing image processing software, but uninstalling it did not help. Attempts to delete the software folder failed due to it being open in another program. Contacting customer support was initiated, and the user is considering a potential hardware issue. Reinstalling the USB driver was suggested, along with checking compatibility with the operating system. Interestingly, an audio interface worked fine in the problematic port, indicating the issue may not be hardware-related. Power draw from USB devices was also mentioned as a potential cause of port failure, particularly in setups with multiple connected devices.

I have a computer with two USB ports. I plug a remote keyboard and mouse into one of the USB ports. Yesterday the connection failed. There was a big delay for characters appearing on the screen and many were missing. I plugged into the other USB port and everything was fine. I however need both ports.

I figure some software is messing with the now-bad USB port. Rebooting doesn't help. Task Manager doesn't show anything unusual. I installed some software having to do with image processing recently and the uninstall had no effect, maybe that has something to do with it. When I tried to delete the folder in which the program resides this failed as "the folder or the file in it is open in another program." This shouldn't be. The startup list appears to be OK. Now what? I've contacted the company's customer support, maybe they can help.

To me, it sounds like a hardware problem.
Assuming that it is not a USB hardware problem, you can try reinstalling the USB driver. Check with the manufacturer of that computer. Failing that, Google it and pick the one that matches your OS.

I got rid of the unwanted software. This didn't solve the problem. I plugged my audio interface into the bad USB port and that seems to work just fine. That's strange but I'm back in business.

How long is the USB? Is it longer than, say, 186,000 miles?

Sometimes, you can draw too much power from a USB port, causing it to shut down.

This usually occurs on my Mac mini with a warning because I use an unpowered USB docking station with extra USB ports and connect two drives to transfer files from one to the other.

This week, I saw a documentary done by the French called Les sacrifiés de l'IA, which was presented by a Canadian show Enquête. If you understand French I recommend it. Very eye-opening. I found a similar documentary in English called The Human Cost of AI: Data workers in the Global South. There is also an interview with Milagros Miceli (appearing in both documentaries) on Youtube: I also found a powerpoint presentation by the economist Uma Rani (appearing in the French documentary), AI...
I have been idly browsing what Apple have to offer with their new iPhone17. There is mention of 'Vapour cooling' to deal with the heat generated. Would that be the same sort of idea that was used in 'Heat Pipes' where water evaporated at the processor end and liquid water was returned from the cool end and back along a wick. At the extreme high power end, Vapour Phase Cooling has been used in multi-kW RF transmitters where (pure) water was pumped to the Anode / or alternative Collector and...
