Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a malfunctioning USB port on a computer, specifically related to a keyboard and mouse connection. Participants explore potential causes, including software issues, hardware malfunctions, and power supply concerns. The scope includes troubleshooting steps and user experiences with USB devices.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant reports a delay and missing characters when using one USB port, while another port works fine, suggesting a potential software issue.
  • Another participant proposes that the problem might be hardware-related and suggests reinstalling the USB driver as a possible solution.
  • A later reply indicates that after removing unwanted software, the issue persisted, but plugging in an audio interface to the problematic port worked without issues, raising questions about the nature of the problem.
  • One participant humorously questions the length of the USB connection, implying a possible misunderstanding of USB functionality.
  • Another participant mentions that drawing too much power from a USB port can cause it to shut down, sharing an experience with a Mac mini and a USB docking station.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on whether the issue is software or hardware-related, and the discussion remains unresolved with multiple competing perspectives on the cause of the malfunction.

Contextual Notes

There are limitations regarding assumptions about the hardware and software configurations, as well as the specific nature of the USB devices involved. The discussion does not clarify the exact conditions under which the problems occur.

I have a computer with two USB ports. I plug a remote keyboard and mouse into one of the USB ports. Yesterday the connection failed. There was a big delay for characters appearing on the screen and many were missing. I plugged into the other USB port and everything was fine. I however need both ports.

I figure some software is messing with the now-bad USB port. Rebooting doesn't help. Task Manager doesn't show anything unusual. I installed some software having to do with image processing recently and the uninstall had no effect, maybe that has something to do with it. When I tried to delete the folder in which the program resides this failed as "the folder or the file in it is open in another program." This shouldn't be. The startup list appears to be OK. Now what? I've contacted the company's customer support, maybe they can help.

To me, it sounds like a hardware problem.
Assuming that it is not a USB hardware problem, you can try reinstalling the USB driver. Check with the manufacturer of that computer. Failing that, Google it and pick the one that matches your OS.

I got rid of the unwanted software. This didn't solve the problem. I plugged my audio interface into the bad USB port and that seems to work just fine. That's strange but I'm back in business.

How long is the USB? Is it longer than, say, 186,000 miles?

Sometimes, you can draw too much power from a USB port, causing it to shut down.

This usually occurs on my Mac mini with a warning because I use an unpowered USB docking station with extra USB ports and connect two drives to transfer files from one to the other.
