Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the calculation of data rates for AVI files, specifically focusing on the audio and video components of a given file. Participants explore how to accurately compute the overall data rate based on the provided specifications.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents a specific AVI file's details, including size, resolution, audio bit rate, and video bit rate, and expresses confusion over the overall data rate calculation.
  • Another participant questions whether the confusion pertains to the audio or video rate.
  • A third participant provides a link to a resource that may assist in understanding rates and sizes related to video files.
  • Another participant agrees that the calculated video data rate seems inconsistent with the provided bit rates, suggesting that the video should have a higher data rate based on the file size and duration.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express confusion and disagreement regarding the calculation of the overall data rate, with no consensus on how to resolve the discrepancies between the calculated and expected values.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not clarify the assumptions or definitions used in their calculations, and there are unresolved questions regarding the methodology for determining the overall data rate.

Ok something is confusing me, I have this file here...

.avi

102,892 KB size
640x480
11m:36s

Audio:
Bit rate: 127kbps
MPEG Layer-3

Video:
23 frames/econd
147kbps
24bit
XVID Compression

Now I'm kind of confused... I calculated the overall data rate to be 1200kbps or so... yet those only seem to add up to 300kbps... how are you suppose to calculate this stuff?

audio or video rate?

Yah it doesn't add up dduardo :) The video should have been 1200kbps using the real size and time but the two bit rates don't add up to that.
