SUMMARY

A VPN can be configured to restrict access to specific websites, serving as a controlled gateway rather than a full internet access tool. This type of VPN is often utilized by companies to limit corporate users to essential resources while maintaining security. The configuration allows for tailored access, functioning similarly to a firewall, which can either permit or deny access to certain web servers or networks. This approach is beneficial for organizations aiming to manage user access effectively.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of VPN technology and its configurations
  • Knowledge of firewall principles and access control
  • Familiarity with corporate network security practices
  • Basic concepts of remote access and network connectivity
NEXT STEPS
  • Research VPN configuration options for restricting website access
  • Explore firewall settings and their role in network security
  • Learn about corporate VPN solutions like Cisco AnyConnect
  • Investigate parental control software that integrates with VPNs
USEFUL FOR

This discussion is beneficial for IT professionals, network administrators, and parents seeking to implement controlled internet access solutions. It provides insights into VPN configurations for corporate environments and personal use cases.

Am told there's a VPN that only gives access to certain websites. So it's not one enabling you to surf the internet as if you were in a virtual place, accessing all websites that are 'local' to that virtual place. Is there such a VPN?

Just out of curiosity, why would you WANT such a limited capability?

Couldn't someone want a capability to limit (e.g. to restrict his kids (not that realistically that's practicable)), as distinguished from a limited capability?

VPN stands for Virtual Private Network, it allow you to connect to a network over a network connection. It was traditionally used to provide access to a specific network only, for example to allow people to work remotely while still accessing the office computers/servers while dialled in via a modem.. The fact the internet came along afterwards is just coincidense and the you could also grant access to the internet if you wished.

Generally speaking that server your VPN connects to can be configured to allow access to whatever it wants you to, be it a single web server, a company network, or the entire internet. If you like it can work like a firewall.
