This means Physics Forums will attempt to communicate to arxiv.org when a paper is linked to it in a post. If the pingback is accepted then PF will be listed as a blog reference for that paper. That is very good for attracting skilled visitors.

Important: For the pingback to fire, the arxiv link must be to the abstract page and not to the pdf file or elsewhere. Please make sure from now on you link to the paper's abstract page.

As a humble pf user, I've dreamed of a filter executed for each post made that automatically transforms any arxiv pdf links in a post to a link to the abstract page. Sounds like a win-win now...

For every abstract there is a list of referenced blogs. PF would be listed as one of those blogs referencing the paper.

The pingbacks are manually moderated. It can take weeks. We are working with their support to iron out any problems.

Thanks, they're in for a lot of moderation then I suppose for example the huge threads(if a new one starts) in the BTSM forum with lots of references.

Some updates have been made to the trackback system. Can someone post a legitimate arxiv paper reference in a thread? Not here, we don't want to send a bunch of junk test pings.
