SUMMARY

Oxidation numbers are essential for understanding redox reactions in chemistry. They represent the degree of oxidation of an atom in a compound, with an increase indicating oxidation and a decrease indicating reduction. The discussion emphasizes the importance of online resources for learning about oxidation numbers, suggesting that a simple Google search can yield comprehensive information. Additionally, a mnemonic is provided to help remember the definitions: "oxidation is increase in oxidation number and reduction is decrease in oxidation number."

PREREQUISITES
  • Basic understanding of chemical reactions
  • Familiarity with redox processes
  • Knowledge of chemical nomenclature
  • Ability to interpret chemical formulas
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the role of oxidation numbers in balancing redox reactions
  • Learn about common oxidation states of elements
  • Explore the application of oxidation numbers in organic chemistry
  • Study the differences between oxidation states and formal charges
USEFUL FOR

Chemistry students, educators, and anyone interested in mastering redox reactions and oxidation states in chemical compounds.

What have you tried to understand about it? Googling the term 'oxidation number' seems like a good start. The first hit will give you an overplus of information.

Yeah, googling it would give you what you need.
Also, if ever in need of a way to remember it during a test (believe me, been there done that) just remember that
"oxidation is increase in oxidation number and reduction is decrease (well, reduction obviously:P) in oxidation number"
