SUMMARY

The discussion centers on identifying complex mathematical questions suitable for a 2500-word research essay, with a focus on university-level concepts. Participants suggest exploring topics such as game theory, abstract algebra, and p-adic numbers, emphasizing the need for questions rather than concepts. Notable examples include the intriguing properties of 10-adic numbers, specifically the equation 333333334 = 2/3, and its implications in calculations. The conversation encourages a blend of fun and rigor in mathematical exploration.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of game theory principles
  • Familiarity with abstract algebra concepts
  • Knowledge of p-adic numbers and their properties
  • Basic calculus skills for exploring complex mathematical questions
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the foundational principles of game theory
  • Explore advanced topics in abstract algebra
  • Investigate the properties and applications of p-adic numbers
  • Examine the implications of 10-adic numbers in mathematical calculations
USEFUL FOR

Students, educators, and researchers in mathematics, particularly those seeking to deepen their understanding of complex mathematical questions and concepts for academic essays.

This isn't a question, per se.

I have to write a 2500 word + research essay on a mathematical concept for school. It's expected that I look into university-level concepts; game theory and abstract algebra are among common subjects.

I proposed some ideas to my math teacher, but they were shot down because they were looking at a mathematical concept instead of a mathematical question.

So basically, I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions for famous (or not), complicated questions that I could possibly stretch out a solution and explanation for in around 2500 words.

I do enjoy Calculus, so I was looking into there but couldn't find anything complex enough, so I'm asking you guys. Of course, if you know any sort of early-university-level questions in a different subject that could work I'd love to hear about it too.
