I'm seeking a few quotes on "what it means to be an educated person" for an assignment I'm working on for my writing class. I have found a ton of really good ones online, but the problem is that they only list the author and not the source (book, interview, speech, etc.) and the source can be pretty hard to track down. :frown: The objective is just to use them so create a sample annotated bibliography, so I have to seek out the full details.

I thought I would ask you guys if you have any favorites you could share. I would greatly appreciate it if you have any suggestions.

And if you know of a website where I could find quotes with sources included that would be awesome, too!

Thank you! :!)

You could skim through the quotes in the Favorite quotes thread. A few of the mentors also have some good ones along those lines for their sigs.

OK, thanks, I'll try that. But I think it will still be hard to "source" them. For instance I found a great quote from Alvin Toeffler, and I was able to guess that it was from "Future Shock" because I read the book a hundred years ago, but getting absolute proof that he wrote it in that particular book took several hours of searching.

Google on - "speeches","being educated"

For example - Speech by Cuban Foreign Minister Felipe Pérez Roque delivered on Wednesday, March 16, 2005, at the 61st Period of Sessions of the UN Human Rights Commission in Geneva, Switzerland.

The Cuban people strongly believe in freedom, democracy and human rights. It took them a long time to achieve them and they are aware of their price. They are a people in power. That is the difference.

There cannot be democracy without social justice. There is no possible freedom if it is not based on the enjoyment of education and culture. Ignorance is the cumbersome shackle squeezing the poor. Being educated is the only way to be free! - which is the sacred tenet that we Cubans learned from the Apostle of our independence.

But that is not a quote - the speaker did not quote someone.

Graduation speeches on Yahoo might help.

Thanks, 'nuc! This is very helpful! Searching in commencement speeches is a great idea!

Ah, looks like Astronuc has a better idea.
Usually I am pretty good at tracking things down with Google but I could see where quotes might be more difficult.

For variety, you could also look in court cases and decisions regarding education. For instance, this is from the Brown v. Board of Education majority opinion:
Today, education is perhaps the most important function of state and local governments. Compulsory school attendance laws and the great expenditures for education both demonstrate our recognition of the importance of education to our democratic society. It is required in the performance of our most basic public responsibilities, even service in the armed forces. It is the very foundation of good citizenship. Today it is a principal instrument in awakening the child to cultural values, in preparing him for later professional training, and in helping him to adjust normally to his environment. In these days, it is doubtful that any child may reasonably be expected to succeed in life if he is denied the opportunity of an education. Such an opportunity, where the state has undertaken to provide it, is a right which must be made available to all on equal terms.

Maybe that's not quite what you're looking for- just an idea. You can search http://www.findlaw.com/casecode/index.html for cases regarding education. http://www.supremecourtus.gov/opinions/obtainopinions.pdf lists places to find Supreme Court opinions.
I'll keep thinking.

I could give some of my original creations

I imagine these quotations books would include detailed sources:
http://www.bartleby.com/66/
http://www.bartleby.com/63/
http://www.bartleby.com/100/
They are also searchable. For instance, here's the first result from "education" search of http://www.bartleby.com/66/:
NUMBER: 35530
QUOTATION: What education is to the individual man, revelation is to the human race. Education is revelation coming to the individual man, and revelation is education that has come, and is still coming to the human race.
ATTRIBUTION: Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781), German playwright, philosopher. The Education of the Human Race, sec. 1-2, 18th Century Philosophy, p. 225, ed. Lewis W. Beck, Free Press, New York (1966)
