AI Thread Summary
PhD admissions primarily occur in the fall semester, with most top universities only accepting students during this period. The discussion highlights the challenges faced by an individual who assumed admissions were open year-round, realizing that this misconception could lead to a two-year wait for enrollment. The individual is preparing to take the physics GRE and general GRE but is concerned about the limited options for spring admissions, noting that very few universities offer this. They are considering whether to apply to lesser-known institutions to start sooner or wait for better opportunities. The financial burden of pursuing a master's degree in Europe is also a concern, especially regarding living expenses without funding. The American Institute of Physics provides a resource for checking open deadlines for fall admissions, which could help in identifying potential universities.

I had a presumption that PhD admissions happen all year. Apparently I was wrong, and this could cost me.

I am going to take the physics GRE on march and the general GRE probably after that.

This means if I want to get admitted for a university on fall semester, I will have to wait about two years! From now (Jan 2019) to (~Sept 2020)... I was hoping to find universities that admit PhD students on spring, but they are few. Funny thing, most top universities (around 90%) admit students only on fall semester.

Should I sacrifice the possibility of going to a good university (relatively speaking) so that I can start earlier?

Any thoughts on what should I do?

Some universities in the US still have open deadlines for next fall. This list is maintained by the American Institute of Physics:

Click on "Fall" under "Admission deadline (international)" to put the list in sequence. (I assume you're not in the US.)

Thanks for the link. Yes I am not.

I have been looking at universities individually. Visited more than a hundred US university website, most of the deadlines I saw where on Dec or early Jan, and barely no one was offering spring admission.

I was thinking of applying for Msc in Europe. But it is financially exhausting, even if I got admitted in a country like Germany where intuition is not an issue, I will still have to provide money for living if I couldn't get funding.

I'm going to make this one quick since I have little time. Background: Throughout my life I have always done good in Math. I almost always received 90%+, and received easily upwards of 95% when I took normal-level HS Math courses. When I took Grade 9 "De-Streamed" Math (All students must take "De-Streamed" in Canada), I initially had 98% until I got very sick and my mark had dropped to 95%. The Physics teachers and Math teachers talked about me as if I were some sort of genius. Then, an...
Bit Britain-specific but I was wondering, what's the best path to take for A-Levels out of the following (I know Y10 seems a bit early to be thinking about A-levels, but my choice will impact what I do this year/ in y11) I (almost) definitely want to do physics at University - so keep that in mind... The subjects that I'm almost definitely going to take are Maths, Further Maths and Physics, and I'm taking a fast track programme which means that I'll be taking AS computer science at the end...
After a year of thought, I decided to adjust my ratio for applying the US/EU(+UK) schools. I mostly focused on the US schools before, but things are getting complex and I found out that Europe is also a good place to study. I found some institutes that have professors with similar interests. But gaining the information is much harder than US schools (like you have to contact professors in advance etc). For your information, I have B.S. in engineering (low GPA: 3.2/4.0) in Asia - one SCI...
