Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the implications of the Goldbach conjecture, specifically what would rely on its truth and the potential consequences of proving it. The scope includes theoretical considerations and the impact on the mathematical community.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions what relies on the Goldbach conjecture being true and what would happen if it were proven correct.
  • Another participant suggests that if proven, nothing significant would change, and it would simply become the Goldbach Theorem.
  • A different viewpoint humorously notes that mathematicians would need to find other pursuits if the conjecture were resolved.
  • There is a discussion about the recognition and fame that would come to the individual who proved the conjecture, including the possibility of winning a Fields Medal.
  • One participant adds a light-hearted comment about the practical benefits of having money, referencing getting coffee.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the significance of proving the Goldbach conjecture, with some downplaying its impact while others highlight the personal recognition for the prover. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the broader implications of the conjecture's truth.

Contextual Notes

Participants do not delve into specific mathematical dependencies or assumptions related to the conjecture, leaving the discussion somewhat open-ended.

The question in the title really says it all...

I was wondering, what relies on the Goldbach conjecture being true? What would happen if it was proven correct?

1. Nothing.
2. It would become the Goldbach Theorem.
3. A lot of math guys would have to find some other way to spend their time.

Ok, so what would happen to whoever proved it?

He would become a famous mathematician. He might even win the fields medal.

Ok, thank you =)

If he had $5.00 in his pocket, he could get some coffee at any Starbucks.
