What are these speakers/microphones alongside professional soccer fields?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the purpose of various pods observed along the sidelines of professional soccer fields, specifically whether they are microphones, speakers, or possibly other devices such as sport radar systems. The scope includes technical speculation and observational inquiries related to sports broadcasting and data collection.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory
  • Debate/contested
  • Technical explanation

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the function of the pods, suggesting they might be microphones or speakers and inquires about their purpose in relation to the game of soccer.
  • Another participant proposes that the pods are likely microphones intended to capture stadium atmosphere and spectator chants for television coverage, although they hedge this with "very likely."
  • A participant speculates on the possibility that the microphones could be used to relay sounds as heard by players on the field, contrasting this with systems used in American football broadcasts.
  • There is a query about the distribution of the pods, specifically why there might be more near the goals, which leads to a disagreement about their placement.
  • Another participant suggests that the pods could be sport radar devices used for data collection and analysis in soccer, drawing a parallel to advanced analytics in other sports.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the purpose and distribution of the pods, with no consensus reached on whether they are microphones, speakers, or radar devices. The discussion remains unresolved regarding their exact function.

Contextual Notes

Participants reference different broadcasting practices in American football compared to soccer, indicating potential differences in sound capture techniques. There are also uncertainties regarding the exact placement and number of pods along the field.

I keep seeing these pods along the sidelines of the professional soccer fields on TV (pro footbol pitches), and I'm wondering what they are for. There seem to be more of them at the ends of the field, and especially near the goals. Are they microphones? If so, what are they for? Who hears the sound? The game of soccer is not exactly a very player sound intensive game, IMO.

If they are speakers, what do they broadcast? Some status to the players? Something else? Sorry if it should be obvious, and thanks.

These are very likely mics to catch the stadium atmosphere and the chants of the spectators for a tv coverage. Looks like a Bundesliga match. I raise "very likely" by "certainly".

So I guess "as heard on the field by the players"? American "football" broadcasts use some different stadium noise pickup system, I think. Searching now...

And if so, why are there more pickup pods in the end zones near the goals?

Are there? AFAIK they are more or less equidistantly distributed around the playground, possibly some extra mics where the coaches are.

We don't have Cheerleaders. Except for American football matches, but then there are no spectators.

Maybe they are sport radar devices (like this) that collect data for analyses, like these guys are talking about, but for soccer, rather than football or baseball.

An incredible amount of data are now collected for sports analyses now.
Its like high tech Moneyball.
