What Can You Expect at Culham Fusion Summer School?

In summary, the summer school run at Culham is aimed at undergrads and graduate students in physics. It's a two-week program with a lot of intellectual stimulation and learning. If you're from the UK, you may not be able to participate due to the cost.

Hey there,

has anyone out there ever attended the summer school run at Culham. I've been told its great by physicists but was wondering how useful it would be for an engineering undergrad with an interest in the field.

The website says its run for undergrads as well as grad students and researchers. What level is the material pitched at? Is it likely to go over my head?

Its fairly pricey, but on the plus side itcould be two weeks of intellectual stimulation and learning in a field I have interest in!

If you'd rather be paid for such a thing, the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory has a similar program that lasts an entire summer:

I got into this program this year but I chose not to go, so I can't say much about it.

Thanks for the recommendation It looks a great program, however I'm from the UK so wouldn't be eligible.

Out of interest, why did you choose not to go?

Ah, I didn't realize it was only available to people in the U.S. I chose not to go because I got into a math program as well and figured out that I'd rather do math for grad school than physics.

i'm sorry for this somewhat out-of-topic reply, but I am also an international student, looking for summer research programs and/or schools.
jemb, are you specifically looking for plasma physics programs, or generally for physics ones? were you able to find any others? I might able to contribute a few names if you specify your interest--and if I have found anything about it.
Monocles, I am also on the edge of deciding whether physics grad school would be better than math or not, I'm double majoring. do you know other such international summer programs?

edit: typo.

You have to pay to go? Has the UK really reached this sad state of affairs? A UK citizen shouldn't have to pay to do applied research for something that could(!) be very useful for everyone in the UK. If you have to pay that means there are no jobs in the area - go and do something else where they actually pay you! And if Culham is so great why don't we have practical fusion after trying for so b****y long...

Where's a "wanker" smiley when you need one!
