SUMMARY

Mr. Brown's morning walk involved a specific path that led him back to his starting point, indicating he was at the North Pole. The bear he encountered was white, as polar bears are the only species found in that region. This conclusion is based on the geographical implications of the described movements. MarkFL provided the correct solution, confirming the bear's color as white.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic geometry and navigation concepts
  • Familiarity with polar geography
  • Knowledge of bear species and their habitats
  • Ability to solve logical puzzles
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the geographical features of the North Pole
  • Study the characteristics and habitats of polar bears
  • Explore logical reasoning puzzles and their solutions
  • Learn about navigation techniques in polar regions
USEFUL FOR

Mathematicians, puzzle enthusiasts, geography students, and anyone interested in logical reasoning and problem-solving.

Here is this week's POTW (sorry about its being late - it's crazy at home!):

-----

One morning Mr. Brown left his tent and walked one mile south. Then he turned east and continued for the second mile. At this point he turned north, walked for another mile, and arrived right back at his tent. While he was out walking, Mr. Brown saw a bear. What color was it?

Congratulations to MarkFL for his correct solution, which I provide below:

The only place on Earth where one can walk x distance south, then x distance east, then x distance north and arrive back at the starting position is the geographic north pole. Because 1 mile is sufficiently short that he never left the Arctic sea ice, the bear must have been a polar bear, and hence was white.
