SUMMARY

The term "foul to give" in basketball refers to a strategic situation where a team has fewer than four team fouls in a quarter, allowing them to commit a foul without incurring a penalty. This tactic is often employed in the closing moments of a game to stop the clock and regain possession, particularly when a team is trailing. If a team with three fouls commits a foul on the opposing team (not during a shooting attempt), they can potentially minimize the score difference while regaining possession of the ball. This strategy is crucial for teams looking to catch up in tight game situations.

One of the teams is trailing in the score, and wants to get the ball back. The other team has the ball. If a guy from the other team successfully shoots a basket, the trailing team will fall back by 2 more points. But, if they can foul a guy on the other team (not in the act of shooting) and, if the guy only gets one foul shot, they will get the ball back only trailing by one more point. (Plus, they will get the ball back right away. Plus, he might miss the foul shot.) Then, if they come back down and score, they gain a point on the team that was leading. Now, the guy they foul will get only one foul shot if the trailing team is not in the "penalty situation" (less than 4 team fouls in the quarter). When they are in this situation, the are said to "have a foul to give." This is all part of a strategy for trying to catch up, particularly at the end of the game when the team with the lead is trying to "run out the clock."

I'm not a native speaker, so reading sport's analysis reports really gives me a serious headache. ?:) Needless to say, I won't understand a thing when listening them on radio or TV :nb):DD
