Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the term 'jiffy' as it is used in various scientific and technological contexts, including electronics, computing, and physics. Participants explore the different definitions and implications of the term across these fields.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Meta-discussion

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that in electronics, a jiffy refers to the time between alternating current power cycles, specifically 1/60 or 1/50 of a second.
  • Another participant mentions that in computing, a jiffy is defined as the duration of one tick of the system timer interrupt.
  • A further contribution cites astrophysics and quantum physics, where a jiffy is described as the time it takes for light to travel one fermi, as defined by Edward R. Harrison.
  • Some participants express surprise and humor regarding the implications of using 'jiffy' in everyday conversation.
  • A participant raises a question about whether 'jiffy' could be related to the term 'jerk'.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree on the existence of multiple definitions of 'jiffy' across different fields, but there is no consensus on the origins or relationships of the term to other concepts.

Contextual Notes

Definitions of 'jiffy' may depend on specific contexts, and the discussion does not resolve the potential connections between 'jiffy' and other terms like 'jerk'.

I'm watching the History Channel program Modern Marvels "Measure It" and learned there is a unit of measurement called the Jiffy.
In electronics, a jiffy is the time between alternating current power cycles, 1/60 or 1/50 of a second...

In computing, a jiffy is the duration of one tick of the system timer interrupt.

In astrophysics and quantum physics a jiffy is, as defined by Edward R. Harrison,[5] the time it takes for light to travel one fermi, which is the size of a nucleon.

So every time I told someone I would be there in a jiffy, I was lying.

Who knew?

my life is in shambles from this revelation.

Is it also a derivative of a jerk?
