Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the status of the "simple" function in MATLAB, particularly in the context of its utility for simplifying expressions or equations. Participants explore the changes in MATLAB versions and the functionality of the current "simplify" function.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant notes that their textbook describes the "simple" function as useful for showing multiple steps in simplifying expressions.
  • Another participant claims that the "simple" function has been replaced by "simplify".
  • A different participant expresses concern that "simplify" only provides the simplest answer, contrasting it with the "simple" function's ability to show various simplification steps.
  • One participant suggests that "simple" was removed after MATLAB version R2014b and provides a link to the documentation for "simplify".

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants have differing views on the functionality of the "simplify" function compared to the "simple" function, with no consensus on whether "simplify" adequately replaces "simple".

Contextual Notes

The discussion highlights potential limitations in understanding the changes between MATLAB versions and the specific functionalities of the functions mentioned.

Hello All,
I have a question regarding the simple function in MATLAB.
My textbook talks about it and it looks very useful, it will show you a bunch of steps of how to simplify an expression or equation.
I am using MATLAB R2018b and it looks like the function is gone. I am wondering if something took its place? it looks super useful.
Thanks so much

The "simple" function was replaced by "simplify".

Hmmm. When I type simplify it only shows me the simplest answer, versus in my textbook when you type simple it shows a ton of different answers, going through each possible way to simplify it until you get to the "simplest" one.
