Yes, things like that can and do happen when we engineers get bored. Wonderful isn't it.
 
Yes how an engineering mind can spend so much time on something completely useless is still a mystery, especially to me...
 
Building contraptions and other things of that sort is what an engineer does...how useful they are and how much is paid for them determine whether or not the engineer is doing it for a job.
 
Here's a video by “driving 4 answers” who seems to me to be well versed on the details of Internal Combustion engines. The video does cover something that's a bit shrouded in 'conspiracy theory', and he touches on that, but of course for phys.org, I'm only interested in the actual science involved.
