Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around finding a readable introductory text for material science, specifically focusing on electronic materials such as semiconductors. Participants share recommendations and personal experiences with various textbooks.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant requests recommendations for introductory books on electronic materials, noting their background in physics and mathematics.
  • Another participant suggests a specific book available on Amazon, mentioning that it includes additional solved exercises but also notes that it is quite introductory and may not meet the depth required for solid state physics.
  • A different participant expresses that they only need an introductory book for a research project, indicating a more casual approach to the material.
  • Another participant shares their negative experience with a textbook by Kasap, criticizing its lack of mathematical rigor and proofs despite containing a lot of information.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not appear to reach a consensus on the best introductory text, with differing opinions on the suitability of the suggested materials and personal preferences expressed.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express specific needs for the material, such as the level of mathematical detail and the depth of content, which may influence their recommendations.

As the title,

Anyone know any good readable intro book of material science, especially dealing with electronic materials(semiconductors, etc.)?

I am a Physics major in sophomore year..
I took Calc 1-3, linear algebra, ODE and some intro EM and modern physics

Physics news on Phys.org
You can probably have a look at:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/0071244581/?tag=pfamazon01-20

The accompanying CD contains additional solved exercises.Edit: I just read that you're a physics major, this book is really introductory and doesn't go deep, it isn't on par with any of the texts in solid state physics.

well, it's ok I guess..
I only need an intro book for some research project

I had to use the newer version of Kasap (who is a professor at my university), and I really did not like the textbook. There is a lot information, but the math is severely lacking, along with proofs.
