What is the average velocity of an object moving with a constant acceleration?

Click For Summary

Homework Help Overview

The problem involves an object starting from rest and moving along the x-axis with a constant acceleration of 4 m/s². The specific question is about determining the average velocity as the object moves from x=2 m to x=8 m.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Assumption checking, Problem interpretation

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants express uncertainty about the correct formula for average velocity and how to derive it. There are attempts to identify relevant equations and clarify how to find the time variable "t" using the given data.

Discussion Status

Some participants have suggested using specific equations related to motion under constant acceleration, while others are questioning how to apply these equations effectively. There is no clear consensus on the approach yet, but the discussion is exploring various interpretations and methods.

Contextual Notes

Participants are working under the constraints of a homework assignment, which may limit the information they can use or the methods they can apply. There is also a noted confusion regarding the application of the average velocity formula and the necessary parameters to calculate it.

Homework Statement

An object starts from rest at the origin and moves along the x-axis with a constant
acceleration of 4m/s^2. Its average velocity as it goes from x=2m to x=8m is?

Homework Equations

I think V=bt^2. But not quite sure.

The Attempt at a Solution

No idea, how to solve.

find the general formula for average velocity.
and, find "t", using the given data, and one of those uniform acceleration equations

How do you find "t" using average velocity?

use
d= d0 + v0t+0.5gt^2 equation
