Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the discrepancy in engine power calculations for the Toyota Prius. Participants explore the differences between a calculated power output of 162.1 kW and the manufacturer's specified output of 73 kW, examining the implications of these figures in the context of vehicle performance.

Discussion Character

  • Technical explanation
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant calculates the power output of the Toyota Prius to be 162.1 kW, while the official specification states it is 73 kW.
  • Another participant questions the source of the figures and seeks clarification on the nature of the inquiry.
  • A participant challenges the validity of the calculated scenario, suggesting that the power output needed to accelerate a vehicle of that weight under specific conditions exceeds what a Prius can provide.
  • It is noted that total power available can be derived from both the internal combustion engine and the electric motors in hybrid vehicles like the Prius.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the accuracy and context of the power calculations, with no consensus reached regarding the source of the discrepancy.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions about the assumptions made in the calculations, the definitions of power output being used, and the specific scenarios considered in the discussion.

hey guys ,
i really need your help :)
this my calculations on toyota prius model and when i calculate the IC engine power i found it equal 162.1 kw
when i open Toyota Prius Specifications i found it equal only 73 kw
i don't know where is the problem
please help me

Where are you getting your figures from?
What exactly is the question?

the power i get is 162 kw and this is suppose to be 73 kw as toyota engine
what is wrong with my calculation ?

Why is it supposed to be as the cars power output?

ie, How did you come up with that scenario.
Is it an official Toyota performance scenario, for the Prius? What you have shown is that a car that weighs nearly 1.8 tons cannot accelerate up a 1:5 hill at 0.18g at 60mph with the power output of a Prius. Which I would say is probably right.

Did you make up the scenario?

Total power available is obtained by adding the power from the engine and the power from the motors.

Thanks guys for helping me, I really appreciate such an efficient support but i find the mistake
thanks :)
