Homework Help Overview

The problem involves a train's final speed after accelerating from an initial speed. The initial speed is given in kilometers per hour, while the acceleration is in meters per second squared, creating a need for unit conversion.

Discussion Character

  • Mixed

Approaches and Questions Raised

  • Participants discuss the need to convert the initial speed from km/h to m/s and explore the appropriate equations for calculating final speed. There is some confusion regarding the correct application of the formula and unit consistency.

Discussion Status

Participants are actively engaging with the problem, providing feedback on each other's calculations and clarifying units. Some guidance has been offered regarding the conversion of units and the application of the formula for final speed.

Contextual Notes

There is a noted lack of a calculator for some participants, which may affect their ability to perform calculations. The discussion also highlights the importance of unit consistency in physics problems.

Homework Statement

Hey guys..
A train traveling at 40km/h accelerates at a rate of 5.0m/s^2 for 0.80s.what is its final speed.

2. Homework Equations [/b
i believe this is the equation a=v1-v0/t

The Attempt at a Solution

Im totally stuck i tried but due to a lack of ti 84 i can't get the calculations...Please help

One thing you need to notice is that the initial speed is in km/h and the acceleration is in m/s^2 so I would adjust the initial velocity to be in m/s.

40 km/h = 11.1 m/s

Now Use this equation: Vf = Vo + at to solve for Vf.

so it would be Vf=0+5.0(.80)
which equals 4 so the answer would be 4km/h? I am sorry you know the units?

Vo is 11.1 m/s, not 0. And the units are m/s.

thanks allot so here's my answer

v=11.1+5.0(.80)
4+11.1
15.1m/s?

As far as I can tell, that looks good.
