Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying a sequence of numbers and understanding the underlying function or pattern that generates them. Participants explore various interpretations and mathematical representations related to the sequence.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Mathematical reasoning

Main Points Raised

  • One participant presents a sequence of numbers: 1244, 114448, 12818176, 205090816, and inquires about the next number.
  • Another participant suggests that the next number in the sequence is 1729.
  • A different participant provides a mathematical expression involving powers of 2 and factors, possibly attempting to describe the sequence or its elements.
  • One participant questions the reasoning behind the choice of 1729 as the next number in the sequence.
  • Another participant asserts that 1729 is the fifth value of a specific function defined on natural numbers, which has particular values for the first five inputs.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the next number in the sequence, with multiple interpretations and approaches presented. The reasoning for the choice of 1729 is questioned, indicating a lack of agreement on its validity.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes various mathematical expressions and assumptions that are not fully explained, leaving some aspects of the reasoning and definitions unresolved.

And why do you think it is 1729?

Obviously it's the fifth value of the function f:N->N which is 0 everywhere except for 1 through 5, which have the values (resp.) 1244, 114448, 12818176, 205090816 and 1729.
