Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around identifying a specific article published in Scientific American during the 1970s that focused on stellar collapse and type II supernovas. Participants express interest in the article's title and author, as well as the content related to the evolution of supernova explosions.

Discussion Character

  • Meta-discussion, Historical

Main Points Raised

  • One participant recalls an article from the 1970s discussing stellar collapse and type II supernovas but cannot remember the title or author.
  • Another participant suggests looking at the May 1985 issue of Scientific American, which contains an article titled "How a supernova explodes."
  • A third participant provides a link to a PDF copy of an article, possibly related to the topic, but does not confirm its relevance to the original inquiry.
  • One participant notes that ideas about supernova mechanisms have evolved significantly over the years and encourages checking recent entries on arXiv for updated information.
  • A later reply shares a link to a paper titled "Perspectives on Core-Collapse Supernova Theory," indicating ongoing research in the field.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the specific article from the 1970s, and multiple suggestions and resources are presented without agreement on the correct title or author.

Contextual Notes

The discussion reflects varying degrees of familiarity with the literature on supernovas, and there may be assumptions regarding the relevance of suggested articles to the original inquiry.

In the 1970s, Scientific American published a great article on stellar collapse and type II supernovas. It described the evolution of the collapse millisecond-by-millisecond. I would love to re-read it.

Does anybody remember the title and author?

Try the May 1985 issue, with the article entitled, "How a supernova explodes".

There's a pdf copy of this article online:

Ideas about supernova mechanisms have changed drastically over the past few decades. Check out recent entries on arxiv.

How about giving us a teaser?
