Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around a puzzle posed by an instructor: "What will you add with 9 to make it six?" Participants explore the nature of the question, its phrasing, and possible interpretations, with a focus on whether it constitutes a mathematical problem or a brain teaser.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested
  • Conceptual clarification
  • Exploratory

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses confusion about the question, suggesting that the phrasing makes it impossible to answer due to the condition of not allowing negative numbers.
  • Another participant proposes that the question might be a puzzle rather than a straightforward math problem.
  • Several participants suggest that the question could involve creative interpretations, such as representing the number 9 in different ways, including the letter "S" or visual representations like spinning the number.
  • There is a mention of moving the discussion to a different forum, indicating a recognition that the question may not fit traditional mathematical inquiry.
  • One participant acknowledges the unconventional nature of the question and suggests that it is indeed a homework question.
  • Another participant humorously notes that the letter "S" could be a valid answer, while others reflect on how it relates to the original question.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the nature of the question or its answer. There are multiple interpretations and competing views regarding whether it is a mathematical question or a brain teaser.

Contextual Notes

Some participants express uncertainty about the original language of the question, which may affect its interpretation. The discussion also highlights the informal nature of the forum and the expectations around posting homework questions.

What is the question? The way you have it phrased there is no answer- you've simply added a condition that rejects any correct answer.

What will you add with 9 to make it six? No negative please.

that's the exact question my instructor gave! it's a puzzle!

I'm moving this to the brain teasers forum, then, since it is not a question on mathematics.

I'm afraid this isn't how the forums work. If you want someone to help you with a problem, you will need to wait until they come and find your post and, if they decide to, to post a comment. Bumping your thread like this will not be tolerated.

Is this a homework question or something?

I can think of one answer: what is another way of representing the number 9?

180 degrees? Spin it round and it's a six. Seems a bit silly, but without using a negative it's all I can think of.

edit- yeah, S. d'oh

Are you being serious? Look back and recap: what was the question? How does S answer the question?
