What would Einstein think of string theory?

Click For Summary
The discussion explores whether Einstein would understand and appreciate modern superstring theory if presented to him before his death in 1955. Participants suggest that he might recognize its geometric nature but would likely critique its lack of determinism, which he valued. There is a consensus that while string theory aligns with some of Einstein's ideas, it does not fully meet his expectations for a deterministic framework. The conversation highlights the tension between Einstein's theories and contemporary physics. Ultimately, the discussion reflects on how Einstein might react to advancements in theoretical physics.

If you could magically go back in time, and spend two hours with Einstein shortly before he died in 1955, could you explain to him current modern superstring theory? If so, what would he think of it?

He would say: "I always knew that we can go further with kind of deterministic and geometric theory" He would say: "Großartig!" lol

String theory is geometric, but AFAIK, its still not deterministic in the sense that Einstein wished.

"Supernovae evidence for foundational change to cosmological models" https://arxiv.org/pdf/2412.15143 The paper claims: We compare the standard homogeneous cosmological model, i.e., spatially flat ΛCDM, and the timescape cosmology which invokes backreaction of inhomogeneities. Timescape, while statistically homogeneous and isotropic, departs from average Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker evolution, and replaces dark energy by kinetic gravitational energy and its gradients, in explaining...
