Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding beginner-friendly simulation software for learning the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, particularly aimed at students in mechanical engineering. Participants share suggestions and perspectives on the best approach to learning, including software recommendations and the importance of theoretical understanding.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant asks for recommendations on simulation software suitable for beginners in fluid mechanics.
  • Another participant suggests obtaining a student version of FLUENT as a potential option.
  • A different viewpoint emphasizes the necessity of understanding the underlying theory before engaging with simulation software, arguing that practical results without theoretical knowledge are not beneficial.
  • One participant recommends exploring resources available on the CFD Online website, particularly the online books and guides section, as a way to build foundational knowledge.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is no clear consensus on the best approach to learning fluid mechanics simulations, as participants express differing opinions on the importance of theoretical knowledge versus practical software use.

Contextual Notes

Some participants highlight the need for a solid theoretical background before using simulation tools, suggesting that the discussion may be limited by varying levels of prior knowledge among beginners.

Hi everyone,

Does anyone know what simulation software to learn fundamentals of fluid mechanics for beginner student of mechanical engineering like I can create it by my own?

Thanks in advance

Try to get a student version of FLUENT

Rather than jumping on to some simulation in the first place & learningn it through tutorials, you should better study the theory first.
You should know what you are simulating, feeding the numbers & getting back some cute graphs & visuals may sound very nice, but it is useless without any knowledge of theory that is being used to generate the results.

Spending some time going through the simpler end of material at http://www.cfd-online.com/Links/ (and the whole site) might be worthwhile, the online books & guides section for one.
