Where Can I Find Recommended References for Learning Particle Physics?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around recommendations for learning particle physics, specifically focusing on the standard model and the necessary mathematical background. Participants explore suitable textbooks and resources, as well as the prerequisites in quantum mechanics and mathematics.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Homework-related

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses interest in studying the standard model of particle physics and inquires about the adequacy of "Introduction to Particle Physics" by Griffiths, given their background in quantum mechanics.
  • Another participant suggests that Griffiths is a suitable choice if the individual does not know quantum field theory (QFT).
  • A participant questions the mathematical requirements for understanding Griffiths' book.
  • It is noted that the mathematical prerequisites include complex numbers, linear algebra, and multivariable calculus.
  • A participant requests references for learning the mathematical topics mentioned.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that Griffiths is a suitable starting point for those without knowledge of QFT, but there is no consensus on specific mathematical references or the sufficiency of the proposed resources.

Contextual Notes

The discussion does not resolve the adequacy of Griffiths for all learners, nor does it provide specific references for the mathematical topics required.

I want to study the standard model of particle physics and i want to use some event generator software (Pythia, CompHep, ... ), I have

Introduction to Particle Physics by Griffth

Is this enough to learn the Standard Model, I have some basics in Quantum Mechanics

Any Recommendations ?

If you don't know quantum field theory, then I think Griffiths is a fine choice.

no i don't know QFT , what about the math required for the Griffth Book
