Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around sourcing pure, highly doped semiconductors, specifically a polished piece of material with given dimensions. Participants explore options for purchasing such materials in physical stores rather than online.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about where to buy a fine, pure, highly doped semiconductor without electronic components.
  • Another participant suggests a surplus silicon dealer in Mound, Texas, and mentions lab supply houses as potential sources.
  • A participant expresses surprise at the availability of blank wafers, assuming they were only available to chip manufacturers.
  • There is a question raised about the apparent contradiction between "pure" and "highly doped" semiconductors.
  • A later reply clarifies that the wafers mentioned are surplus to the needs of chip manufacturers.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the terminology used regarding purity and doping levels in semiconductors, indicating a potential area of disagreement.

Contextual Notes

There is uncertainty regarding the definitions of "pure" and "highly doped" in the context of semiconductors, which may affect the discussion.

I do not know if this question relates to this division and would appreciate if it would be moved to proper division.

I want to buy a piece of fine, pure, highly doped semiconductor with dimensions approximately:
7 cm X 7 cm X 1 cm (2 in. X 2 in. X 1/2 in.) It supposed to be just fine and well polished piece of material without any electronic components. In which type of stores it is best to look for?
No online trade or stores please.

Here's a surplus silicon dealer. If you don't want to order online, you can hoof it to Mound, Texas:

Otherwise, try lab supply houses. No online trade, huh? Trying to evade the NSA or some kind of embargo?

cool ... I didn't know one could buy blank wafers ... I assumed it was all inhouse with chip manufacturers

haha that thought also went through my mind

BTW .. isn't pure and highly doped a bit of a contradiction ?

Yah. The operative word about the wafers was that they were 'surplus' to the chip makers needs.
