Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around finding platinum wire locally in the U.S. for use in a hydrogen fuel cell project. Participants explore options for sourcing the material quickly, considering both local stores and shipping alternatives.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant expresses urgency in needing platinum wire before Monday and prefers a local store.
  • Another suggests that finding platinum wire locally may be difficult unless one lives in a large town, recommending next-day shipping as an alternative.
  • A participant mentions the cost of the wire and shipping, questioning if other wire types could serve as a catalyst for the hydrogen fuel cell.
  • Another participant speculates that platinum wire is a specialty item likely not available in local stores and suggests checking with jewelers, while also raising concerns about the purity of jewelry-grade platinum.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants generally agree that finding platinum wire locally is challenging, but there are differing opinions on the practicality of using jewelers and the potential costs involved with shipping.

Contextual Notes

Participants have not reached a consensus on the best sourcing method or the suitability of alternative wire types for the intended application.

I need to have it before Monday, so preferably a brick and mortar store. I live in the States.

I'd guess unless you live in a big town, google it and have it shipped 'next day'

Sounds like a specialty item you're not likely to find in a brick and mortar store (and if you did, you'd probably still be paying for that shipping cost in the price of the item).

Do you think a jeweler might carry it? Probably cheaper to just pay for overnight shipping, though. And I don't know if the type used for jewelry would be the same purity as you'd need for your project.
