Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around course selection for students pursuing a degree in Physics or Electrical Engineering (EE). Participants consider which course to take next from a list of available options, focusing on the implications of their choices for future studies.

Discussion Character

  • Homework-related
  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant suggests taking Physics 2 next, arguing it is typically taken immediately after Physics 1 and that higher mathematics is not needed until later.
  • Another participant agrees that if only one course is to be taken, Physics 2 makes the most sense.
  • Some participants propose that if the student considers doubling up on courses, they should take Physics 2 along with Differential Equations.
  • Multiple participants express agreement on the combination of Physics 2 and Differential Equations as a suitable choice for a double course load.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

There is a general agreement among participants that Physics 2 is a logical next step, especially if only one course is taken. However, there is also a suggestion to consider taking two courses, with a consensus forming around the combination of Physics 2 and Differential Equations.

I am working toward an eventual Physics or EE degree.

I currently have completed the following courses online in this order;

Calc 1, Calc 2, Linear Algebra, Phys 1 (calc based classical mech), working on vector Calc 3.

The following are available for me:

- Complex Variables 1
- Ordinary Diff Eq
- Phys 2 (E&M)

Of the three, which one should I pick next?

Thanks

if you might go into EE or Physics, by all means take PHY 2 next. You don't need the higher maths till later. Typically, PHY 2 is taken immediately after PHY 1.

Ordinarily, with a full course load, taking two makes more sense than taking one. If taking only one, Physics 2 makes the most sense.
