Which Engineering Professional Society to join?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the decision of which engineering professional society to join, specifically the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) versus the Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE). The participant, a CAD designer and production engineer with an HND, seeks guidance on the benefits and differences between these organizations. It is established that IMechE is particularly relevant for CAD engineers, although the appropriate membership level for someone with an HND is uncertain. Joining a professional body is viewed as a significant step for career progression in the engineering field.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of engineering professional societies and their roles
  • Familiarity with membership levels and requirements
  • Knowledge of career progression in engineering fields
  • Basic awareness of CAD design and production engineering
NEXT STEPS
  • Research the membership benefits of IET and IMechE
  • Explore the application process for IMechE with an HND
  • Investigate networking opportunities within engineering professional societies
  • Learn about career advancement resources offered by IET and IMechE
USEFUL FOR

Individuals in the engineering field, particularly CAD designers and production engineers, who are considering joining a professional society for career development and networking opportunities.

Which Engineering Professional Society to join??

Hi, I've been in UK industry as a cad designer/production engineer for about a year now and feel its probably more than about time i joined a professional body.

i have a HND (bombed out of my degree in final year, probably due to being offered a job regardless of final results) so i will no doubt be going in at a disadvantage to other grads.

i'm fairly new to the institution thing in truth, but I'm keen to progress professionally and i think it will be a good step in the right direction.

My question is which one?! my boss is in the IET, but i was rcommended at uni to join IMECHE, is there any benefits/differences i should know of?

any info is welcome.

(and sory if this is a re-hash of another thread, i couldn't find it!)

The IMechE seems like the most relevant to CAD engineers. Not sure which level you'd have to join at though since you've only got an HND.
