Which Simulation Software is Best for Calculating Magnetic Force Interactions?

Click For Summary

Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the search for simulation software suitable for calculating magnetic force interactions, specifically between two identical bar magnets and between a magnet and a steel disc. The focus is on finding a tool that can handle scenarios involving relative motion between the objects.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • An undergraduate student seeks software for simulating magnetic force interactions, expressing concerns about the limitations of standard formulae.
  • Some participants suggest starting with FEMM and MaxFEM as potential software options for the simulations.
  • There are queries regarding the capability of the suggested software to calculate forces and accommodate motion in the simulations.
  • Some participants express uncertainty about their own experience with the software and its applicability to the problem at hand.
  • One participant reports difficulties with user-friendliness and a lack of relevant tutorials for the downloaded software.
  • A participant expresses doubt that magnetostatics would adequately address the motion aspect of the problem.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on the effectiveness of the suggested software, and multiple viewpoints regarding its capabilities and user experience remain present.

Contextual Notes

Limitations include uncertainty about the software's ability to handle motion in simulations and the lack of user-friendly resources or tutorials for the suggested tools.

A warm greeting to all reputed members of physicsforum.com.
I'm an undergraduate student. I'm trying to create a mathematical model for calculation of force of interaction between two identical bar magnets and force of interaction between a magnet and a steel disc.
If I go with standard formulae then it would give me a blurred picture of the situation with certain limitation. So I decided to go for a software which would perform simulation so that a clear picture of force exerted can be formed with less time consumption.
But after searching this forum for a perfect software for this I'm little bit confused. Please help me to find out a good software that can perform the simulation even when there are relative motions between magnet-magnet-steel plate.

I don't know, I have not used either package. I just searched for "free magnetostatic simulator".

Thanks for that. I'm downloading the software let's see would it be helpful as I'm doubtful that masgnetostatics cover the motion part of the problem.

I downloaded the software but it didn't helped as it is not user friendly and I didn't find anything that fits my problem in tutorials or in the software.
Please help me to find out a way for solving this problem.
