Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around identifying the variable star with the longest period, specifically focusing on pulsating variables and their characteristics. Participants explore different types of variable stars, including Mira variables, and share insights on period lengths.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested, Conceptual clarification

Main Points Raised

  • One participant inquires about the specific variable star with the longest period, noting that Mira variables generally have long periods.
  • Another participant suggests Epsilon Aurigae as a candidate, clarifying that it is not a Mira variable.
  • A different participant specifies interest in the longest period pulsating variable and mentions conflicting information regarding the upper limits for Mira periods, citing values of 700 to 1000 days.
  • One participant expresses difficulty in finding the information on the AAVSO site.
  • A link is provided to a source that mentions a star with a period of 1630 days.
  • Another participant comments on the practical challenges posed by very long period variables, particularly those in the infrared range.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants do not reach a consensus on which specific star has the longest period, and multiple competing views and uncertainties remain regarding the definitions and examples of variable stars.

Contextual Notes

There are unresolved questions about the definitions of variable star types and the specific criteria for measuring periods, as well as discrepancies in reported period lengths.

Hi, what is the name of the variable star with the longest period? I know Mira variables are in general the longest, but which particular star has the longest period? Thanks.

Off the top of my head, I will guess Epsilon Aurigae. It's not a Mira, though.

Ah, sorry I meant longest period pulsating variable. One book I have gives 700 days as the upper limit for Miras, another 1000 days.

Still looking for this information...failed to find on AAVSO site.

Thank you sir, quite interesting. I suppose very long period variables are somewhat of a practical problem, even more so if in the infrared range.
