SUMMARY

The discussion centers on the calculation of the Compton scattering angle when given a Compton wavelength shift of 0.29 pico-meters and a temperature of 600K. The relevant formula used is Δλ = (h/mc)(1 - cosθ), where h is Planck's constant, m is the electron mass, and c is the speed of light. The calculated scattering angle θ is determined to be 28.278 degrees. Participants agree that temperature does not influence the calculation, indicating that the inclusion of T=600K is unnecessary for solving this problem.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of Compton scattering principles
  • Familiarity with the Compton wavelength shift formula
  • Knowledge of Planck's constant, electron mass, and the speed of light
  • Basic trigonometry for angle calculations
NEXT STEPS
  • Review the derivation of the Compton wavelength shift formula
  • Explore the implications of temperature in quantum mechanics
  • Study applications of Compton scattering in particle physics
  • Investigate the role of temperature in other scattering processes
USEFUL FOR

Physics students, researchers in particle physics, and educators looking to clarify the relationship between temperature and scattering phenomena.

if the compton wavelength shift is in scattering an electron is 0.29 pico-m, what is the photon scattering angle? (you make take T=600K)

I don't know why I was told the that T=600K?

[tex]\Delta \lambda= \frac{h}{mc} (1-cos\theta)[/tex]

[tex]\frac{h}{mc}=0.00243 nm[/tex]

[tex]0.119341564=1-cos\theta[/tex]

[tex]\theta=28.278 degrees[/tex]

i don't see where the temperature comes in.
is my work correct?

I haven't checked the numbers but the expression is correct. And there should be no role for temperature in the problem.
