Discussion Overview

The discussion centers on the binding energy of deuterons compared to larger nuclei, exploring reasons for the relatively low binding energy of deuterons and expectations regarding binding energy in odd/odd nuclei.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Technical explanation, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions why the binding energy of deuterons is low.
  • Another participant suggests that the expectation for a higher binding energy may be due to the odd/odd nature of the nucleus.
  • A later reply reiterates the expectation for higher binding energy based on the odd/odd classification and mentions an average binding energy of about 7 MeV for nuclei.
  • It is noted that the average binding energy of approximately 7 MeV applies only to larger nuclei.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the expectations for binding energy in deuterons versus larger nuclei, indicating that the discussion remains unresolved.

Contextual Notes

There is a lack of clarity regarding the specific factors influencing binding energy in odd/odd nuclei and how these factors apply to deuterons compared to larger nuclei.

Why do you expect a higher binding energy?

It is an odd/odd nucleus.

Thanks for reply
Because average binding energy of nuclei is near about 7 Mev

Only for larger nuclei.
