Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the necessity of heavy water in the production of plutonium, specifically Pu-239. Participants explore the role of heavy water as a moderator and its impact on neutron energy spectra, while also considering alternative methods.

Discussion Character

  • Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions the need for heavy water in plutonium production.
  • Another participant asserts that heavy water is not necessary, suggesting that the original poster (OP) should investigate the concept of a 'moderator.'
  • A different participant explains that heavy water can provide a more favorable neutron energy spectrum for producing Pu-239, but acknowledges that there are other methods available.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the necessity of heavy water for plutonium production, with some asserting it is not required while others highlight its potential benefits.

We don't.

;-)

To the OP - look up 'moderator'

Heavy water is one way to get a more desirable neutron energy spectrum for the production of Pu-239. There are other ways, so HW is not necessary.
