Work done by a force over a distance, relative or absolute?

Click For Summary
SUMMARY

Work done by a force is defined in terms of displacement rather than distance, making the choice of origin irrelevant. In scenarios where an object moves on a platform that is also in motion, the absolute distance does not affect the calculation of work, as only the displacement relative to the starting point matters. This principle applies when the force and movement are in the same direction and the force remains constant.

PREREQUISITES
  • Understanding of basic physics concepts, specifically work and energy.
  • Familiarity with the definition of displacement in physics.
  • Knowledge of Newton's laws of motion.
  • Basic grasp of relative motion and reference frames.
NEXT STEPS
  • Study the concept of displacement versus distance in physics.
  • Explore Newton's laws of motion for a deeper understanding of force and work.
  • Learn about reference frames and their impact on motion analysis.
  • Investigate practical applications of work calculations in engineering scenarios.
USEFUL FOR

Students of physics, educators teaching mechanics, and anyone interested in understanding the principles of work and energy in relation to motion.

When we calculate the work done by a force applied on an object (suppose force and movement are in the same direction and a constant force) do we take into account the relative distance ot the absolute distance.

When saying relative distance i mean if the object is moving on top of a platform that is also in motion (not same velocity).

Sorry if my explanation is unclear, I can upload a picture to try to explain it a bit better. It may be a stupid question and sorry if I shouldn't post it here, this is my first post.

Thank you very much!

Work is defined in terms of displacement not distance, so the choice of origin is irrelevant.
