Discussion Overview

The discussion revolves around the feasibility and implications of pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering (mechE) followed by a Master of Science in Petroleum Engineering (petE). Participants explore the potential benefits of this educational path in relation to job market opportunities.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • One participant questions whether it is possible to transition from mechE to petE by taking the necessary prerequisites at the graduate school level, suggesting that a broader job market could be advantageous.
  • Another participant asserts that obtaining a second bachelor's degree is pointless, implying a preference for a more streamlined educational path.
  • A subsequent reply clarifies that the discussion is about obtaining a BS in mechE and an MS in petE, arguing that this combination could be beneficial.
  • Another participant advises consulting a graduate advisor, noting that the petroleum industry employs various types of engineers, indicating that guidance from educational institutions may be more informative than the forum discussion.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express differing views on the value of pursuing a second bachelor's degree, with some advocating for the combination of degrees while others question its necessity. The discussion remains unresolved regarding the best approach to transitioning between these fields.

Contextual Notes

There are missing assumptions regarding the specific prerequisites needed for the transition and the potential job market implications of the proposed educational path.

Is it possible if you just take the prerequisites at your grad school to hop from mechE to petroleum? I'm thinking if I go for mechE instead of aero for a broader job market that specializing my ms in petE might be a good idea.. What do you think?

I said a BS in mech engineering.. and "MS" in pet engineering..

thats a bachelors and masters.. that would be helpful.. wouldn't it?

You'd have to speak with a graduate advisor. That industry would have mechanical, civil, and chemical engineers of various sorts. Your school (or other schools with similar programs) should be able to help you with this more than we can.
