Undergrad Probabilities involving Mins and Maxes
Hi, I've studied P(A or B) = P(A U B) - I had a class in probability/statistics. I've never formally studied order statistics, though maybe I've overlapped with it at some point. The maximum case is kind of intuitive - if the max is less than t, everything else is. We can treat it as P(A...- muzihc

Undergrad Probabilities involving Mins and Maxes
I know for sure that P(Max(X, Y) < 1) = P(X < 1)P(Y < 1) if the two RVs are independent, but what does P(Min(X, Y) < 1) equal? Would it be P(Min(X, Y) < 1) = P(X < 1) + P(Y < 1)? Thanks- muzihc

Unique Subspaces for Vector Space V in R3
Homework Statement If R3 is a vector space and V = (x,x,0) is a subspace, find unique subspaces W1 and W2 such that R3 = V ⨁ W1 = V ⨁ W2 Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution Assuming R3 = (x,y,z) - please correct me if I'm wrong somehow - then I could pick a W1 like...- muzihc

Orthogonal functions with respect to a weight
Homework Statement Say functions f and g continuous on [a,b] and happen to be orthogonal with respect to the weight function 1. Show that f or g has to vanish within (a,b). Homework Equations f and g are orthogonal w.r.t. a weight function w(x) if the integral from [a,b] of f(x)g(x)w(x)dx = 0...- muzihc

Constructing a Continuous Function with 2 Different Range Values
Homework Statement Provide an example of f:D-->R which is continuous but whose range has two different numbers only. Homework Equations The Attempt at a Solution For the range to have only two different values, it's seems impossible to construct a continuous function without...- muzihc

Schools Financial Aid in Grad School (a different type of question)
I have an interesting question. I know it's unspoken that a rejection of financial aid is considered a "polite rejection" to your entire application, but what if I don't apply for financial aid? Will that effect me either way? I'm under the impression that schools actually WANT students to...- muzihc

Math What's the value of a Bachelor's in Math?
I'm going to graduate from an average state school in 2011 with a math degree. I AM planning to graduate with honors. What jobs will I find? How much of a difference does a Master's make? Two more years isn't a big deal, but I've had my fill of academia, so I'd rather go straight to the job...- muzihc

Subfunctions returning different types together (in C)
(this is basically a dumbed-down version for the sake of clarity, but gives the same problem I'm getting) I have a subfunction called by main, named calculate, which calls two other subfunctions ("findSum" and "findQuotient") and then returns their data to main. "findSum" calculates the sum...- muzihc

Coding Help: Formatting Float Output in C
I'm very new to C. If I had a program like the one below, I was hoping someone could tell me how I should edit it so that the lines "printf("\n%20s%20f", "Half of 1", div1);" and "printf("\n%20s%20f", "Half of 2", div2);" output decimals without too many excess spaces. Currently when outputted...- muzihc
