Prospects for a mediocre student
Hey all, I graduated recently from the Joint Honours BSc in Applied Mathematics and Physics. My final mark was 58.3% in Physics and 60% in Applied Mathematics. I got a 2.1 in Applied Mathematics and a 2.2 in Physics, overall I got 59.4% (I didn't get the 2.1 overall unfortunately). I got a 1.1...- Onias

How Long for Electric Field to Vanish in a Photoelectron-Irradiated Capacitor?
I might have the name wrong. The force on a charged particle: F = q(E+(vXB)) Obviously the second term is zero. Anyway, thanks for your help, I have enough info to attempt the question at least :)- Onias

How Long for Electric Field to Vanish in a Photoelectron-Irradiated Capacitor?
Could you apply Lorentz' law and calculate the time it would take for the charge to reach the positive plate, when the charges would cancel and, thus, the electric field would vanish? Or am I conceptualizing this wrong?- Onias

How Long for Electric Field to Vanish in a Photoelectron-Irradiated Capacitor?
Homework Statement The negative plate of a charged, isolated parallel plate capacitor with a vacuum gap of width d and carrying a surface charge density s is uniformly irradiated with a short pulse of ultraviolet light whose photon energy is just enough to release a photoelectron at the...- Onias

Can I acheive a first class honours?
Hey guys, I'm doing a four year degree course in theoretical physics (British/Irish). I got a 1.1 (first class honours) in last year's examinations (74.75%), which was in second year and counted for 10% of the marks. This year I only managed 58%, which is a 2.2 (second class honours, grade 2)...- Onias

Graduate What is the Kronecker index in dynamical systems?
Hello all, I was wondering what is the Kronecker index in relation to dynamical systems. For instance a sample question would be find the Kronecker indices ind(0,x-F(x)) and ind(inf,x-F(x)) for the dynamical system {(dx/dt)=g(x,y),(dy/dt)=h(x,y)}. Thanks in advance.- Onias

Graduate What nuclei are stable against beta decay?
That's great. I'm actually taking an examination soon. I hope the teacher is accommodating :) Hypothetically, though, if there weren't any tables in the exam, would I use the semi-empirical mass formula? Thanks again.- Onias

I assume that you calculate the masses using the semi-empirical mass formula, correct?- Onias

Graduate What nuclei are stable against beta decay?
I know odd-odd nuclei are generally unstable against beta decay as the pairing term in the semi-empirical mass formula is less than zero, and I know even-even nuclei are generally stable, but I don't get the rules you apply for even-odd or odd-even nuclei. Do you have to work out the binding...- Onias

How Can I Solve Second Order Inhomogeneous PDEs with a Forcing Term?
Homework Statement Hello, I'm having a problem solving second order inhomogeneous PDEs, for example the standard heat equation with a forcing term Sin(x)Sin(t) added onto it on the right hand side. Homework Equations ut = uxx + Sin(ax)Sin(bt) The Attempt at a Solution I can solve...- Onias

Studying Irish student studying in the UK?
Well, I'm currently doing an internship in quantum physics relating to Bose-Einstein condensates, Gross-Pitaveskii equation etc. It's a fascinating subject, I really wouldn't mind studying it further. I wouldn't mind doing cosmology either.- Onias

Studying Irish student studying in the UK?
Hi, I'm a physics undergrad in the Republic of Ireland. I would very much like to study abroad for my Master's, most likely in the UK. I was wondering which university I should apply for and I'm not too sure about the reliability of the Times or the Guardian league tables. Could any forum-goers...- Onias
