Software to find similarity of two molecules
Unfortunately it doesn't work because one program outputs coordinates in order 1, 2, 3...8 while the other does 1, 3, 5, 7, 2, 4, 6, 8. Isn't there some well-known chemistry program that allows to export atomic positions from the structure drawn, so that I could do sth like insert coordinates... -

Software to find similarity of two molecules
I have two files with atomic coordinates for the same generated strucutre (cycle made of eight sulphur atoms), but produced by two different progams (so that output files have different coordinates supposedly connected by translation/rotation). Is there some kind of software to compare the two... -

Graduate Why are Fe, Ni, Co ferromagnetic among metals?
What makes Fe, Co and Ni ferromagnetic compared to all other metals (with exception of Gd, Dy and some exotic alloys according to Wikipedia)? If other ferromagnetic metals just have lower Curie temperatures then why is it so? Sub-question: In pure metals is there any correlation in magnetic...- Trave11er

Graduate What is the relationship between creation and annihilation operators in k-space?
Thanks for the replies, The original question actually arose in the context of spin waves which have bosonic excitations on chain of spins - they are not charged so to me it seems that the relation in k-space should hold and it should be possible to prove starting from definition.- Trave11er

Graduate What is the relationship between creation and annihilation operators in k-space?
Hi, Could anyone tell if there exists an identity a_k^\dagger = a_{-k} because intuitively there should be no difference between creating a particle with momentum k and destroying a particle with momentum -k. If true is it possible to show that from the definition a_k = \frac{1}{√V}∫e^{ikx}...- Trave11er

Graduate Delta function and derivative of function wrt itself
Thanks for the replies. Have found the answer in Parr and Yang's book on Density Functional Theory: For a functional F=F[f] have \delta F = \int \frac {\delta F} {\delta f(y)} \delta f(y) \,dy In a special case that F=F(f), i.e. F is just some function of f it is required that: \frac...- Trave11er

Particles QFT for condensed matter physicist (should I?)
Good to know - thanks for the reply. There is no restriction on the amount of courses a student can take, but in terms of workload - well, we have to choose three courses for the coming trimester and take more if you want to - only best three exams of the trimester go into transcript, but then...- Trave11er

CV for physics PhD - what to include?
Thanks for the replies so far. The title is misleading for I meant to ask what to include in CV if you are applying for a PhD position (after finishing your undergraduate education).- Trave11er

Particles QFT for condensed matter physicist (should I?)
It is a QFT in particle physics and includes subtopics such as Vacuum energy, Feynman diagrams/rules, Lorentz invariant propagators - things that condensed matter physicists doesn't need as I would guess. I would like to do theory by the way and my uni does provide a course called Q Condensed...- Trave11er

CV for physics PhD - what to include?
Hi, currently I have the following sections: Personal info, education, research experience, computer skills, extra-curricular activities. Is there anything I am missing? Also, in the education section should I include breakdown on marks in different subjects, or my class each year (UK...- Trave11er

Particles QFT for condensed matter physicist (should I?)
Hi, I would like to ask whether if a course in Quantum Field Theory (in particle physics context) would be of any use to future condensed matter physicist. Is it beneficial to be exposed to things like Canonical Quantization, Interacting Fields, Dirac Equation, Quantizing Dirac field and QED? I...- Trave11er

How can physicists make the world a better place?
Michael Faraday was once asked by one of the British ministers at the time: "What was the use of the law of electromagnetic induction he had discovered?" He replied: "I don't know, but some day you tax it". Speaking of technology that is used to produce most of electrical energy we use today...- Trave11er
