The discussion centers on the phenomenon of ball lightning, referencing a document that explains its characteristics. A contributor notes the addition of this information to a dedicated section on credible anomalies. They propose that ball lightning may take the form of a thickened torus, as this shape can support a nonvanishing vector field, which is relevant to its behavior. The conversation mentions a previous thread on sci.physics.research that included observational reports, highlighting instances where ball lightning has reportedly passed through aircraft hulls and windows, raising questions about the nature of these plasma toroids and their ability to do so.

Thought this may be of interest.

Nice link, thanks Wolram. :approve: I added this to the Ball Lightning section of the Credible Anomalies Napster above.

I think I have an old post somewhere around here in which I suggested the form of ball lightning should be a thickened torus. I suggested it because the torus is the only two dimensional manifold that can support a nonvanishing vector field.
