Discussion Overview

The discussion centers around the behavior of mice and other animals in relation to earthquakes, specifically exploring whether certain species can sense pre-quake signals through electric and magnetic fields. The scope includes biological and behavioral responses to environmental changes, as well as anecdotal evidence from pet owners.

Discussion Character

  • Exploratory, Conceptual clarification, Debate/contested

Main Points Raised

  • Some participants note that Japanese researchers have observed unusual behavior in mice when exposed to electric and magnetic fields, suggesting a possible connection to earthquake prediction.
  • Others mention that it is commonly accepted that birds and humans can sense magnetic fields, raising the question of whether this ability might also exist in other animals.
  • A participant shares a personal anecdote about a stray cat's hostile behavior, speculating whether it could be reacting to pre-quake signals, and relates a story about dogs behaving erratically before an earthquake.
  • Another participant questions whether other animals, such as dogs and snakes, exhibit similar behaviors when an earthquake is imminent.

Areas of Agreement / Disagreement

Participants express interest in the topic and share personal experiences, but there is no consensus on the extent to which animals can predict earthquakes or the mechanisms behind such behaviors. Multiple competing views and anecdotal evidence remain present.

Contextual Notes

The discussion includes anecdotal observations and personal experiences, which may lack scientific rigor or controlled conditions. The relationship between animal behavior and earthquake prediction remains unresolved.

Who May Find This Useful

Japanese researchers have observed mice behaving strangely after being exposed to electric and magnetic fields similar to those sometimes detected before earthquakes.

Note: Though implied as a geology related story, this seemed best posted in biology.

Seems interesting. It is widely acknowledged that birds, and to an extent even humans can sense magnetic fields. Wonder if this sense evolved in some other creatures as well...

I feed a stray cat and a few weeks
ago it started acting hostile tow-
ard me, hissing and cowering when
I filled it's dish.

I was telling this to a woman at
a cafe and said I wondered if it
was being zapped with pre-quake
signals.

The guy at the next table spoke
up and told the story of how his
dogs had gone bannanas on him
one day, running around and
barking, when an earthquake struck
a few minutes later.

There's been no quake here, and
the cat is still hissing at me.
Is it my breath?

dun other animals like dogs and snakes get cagey as well when a earthquake is imminent?
